If a domain is not renewed by its expiry date, it stops working — your website and email go offline. There is then a short grace period in which you can still renew it normally. After that it enters redemption, where it can usually still be recovered but a redemption fee applies on top of the renewal. If it is left long enough it is released and anyone can register it.
